Together, we commit to the following principles
We meet each other as people first and dancers second
We greet each other and treat each other with kindness and respect. We take an interest in the people around us and contribute to an atmosphere where everyone feels seen and valued.
We recognise that everyone arrives with different experiences, emotions, and needs. We practise empathy and assume good intentions while remaining attentive to the impact of our actions.
Consent is an essential part of our dance culture
We listen to our own boundaries and respect the boundaries of others.
We practise both giving and receiving a “no” with respect.
Everyone has the right to say “no” to a dance invitation or a specific movement, or to stop a dance at any time. A refusal does not require explanation and should always be respected gracefully.
Accepting a dance invitation means agreeing to share a dance—nothing more. Any interest beyond dancing should be communicated clearly and respectfully outside of the dance itself.
Healthy communities are built through open, kind, and honest communication
Dance is not only about movement; it is also an opportunity to grow as individuals and as a community.
We talk about our dance culture, our experiences, and our concerns.
We are willing to ask questions, give feedback respectfully, and learn from one another.
When misunderstandings arise, we strive to address them directly, kindly, and constructively.
Everyone belongs on our dance floor
We create an environment where people feel welcome, included, and free to be themselves.
We dance with people of different levels, backgrounds, identities, ages, and experiences. We adapt our dancing to meet one another where we are, so everyone can enjoy the connection.
We make an effort to greet newcomers, invite them to dance, and introduce them to others. We remember that entering a new community can be intimidating and that small gestures of welcome can make a big difference.
Dance is meant to be enjoyable
We celebrate connection, creativity, playfulness, and learning.
We encourage each other and acknowledge what we appreciate in our dances together.
When we want to practise or train specific techniques, we communicate this clearly.
We support each other’s growth by sharing knowledge when invited and by creating spaces where learning feels encouraging rather than judgemental.
Creating a healthy community is everyone’s responsibility
We look after one another and contribute actively to the culture we want to create.
If we witness behaviour that may cause discomfort, exclusion, or harm, we do not ignore it. When appropriate, we check in with the people involved, offer support, or seek help from the Care Team.
We take care of our personal hygiene
We do this out of respect for ourselves and our dance partners.
Small acts of consideration help everyone feel more comfortable and confident on the dance floor. For example, we shower, brush our teeth, bring an extra T-shirt, use mints, and avoid using too much perfume.
We value both memories and presence
We respect the wishes of anyone who prefers not to be photographed or filmed.
We recognise that photos and videos can sometimes make people uncomfortable or take them out of the moment. When recording others, we remain mindful of their comfort and ask for consent when appropriate.
When things go wrong
We are committed to listening, responding with care, and continually improving the safety and wellbeing of our community.
When something feels uncomfortable, unsafe, or inconsistent with these values, we speak up, seek support, or reach out to a member of the Care Team.
Building a healthy community is an ongoing practice
This document is a reflection of the dance culture we want to create together. By participating in Conexão activities, we contribute to a community built on respect, consent, care, inclusion, communication, responsibility, and joy.
Together, we make the dance floor a place where everyone can belong.
